This is the modern coat of arms for the town of Auray, located in Brittany, France. Inhabitants of Auray
are called Alréens (French) and Alreiz (Breton).
- The shield features a running stoat (ermine) on a red background.
- The stoat wears a scarf of ermine spots, a traditional symbol of Brittany.
- The top section (chief) is blue and displays three gold fleurs-de-lis.
- This design was created for the French Wikipedia blazon project.
Historically, the people of Auray have spoken the Vannes dialect of Breton but the citizens spoke French from the eighteenth century onwards. Breton was used for preaching in Auray parishes until the 1930s. In September 2008, 3.27% of children enrolled in primary schools in the town were bilingual.
